Claudia Schumann works on the threshold of psychiatry, visual art, and photography. In this new book she brings together photographic series that show fading or dissolution; in which she “shows” as much as she conceals herself. Out of the image sequences, the concepts of identity, presence, truth, language, sight, denial, and death are unfolding. Destruction, dissolution, and annihilation approach the observer very closely in these images by Claudia Schumann.
This book is published in occasion of the performance “Staging the Face” and an artist talk at the philosophical converence “Language and Politics of the Face” at the Institute of Ethics and Law, University of Vienna, May 29 - 30, 2015, hosted by Brigitta Keintzel, and in conjunction with the presentation within the exhibition “Das Gesicht Die Augen Der Blick” at Galerie Hummel, Vienna, March 27 - June 30, 2015.
